How to Remove an American Credit Acceptance Repossession From Your Credit Report

American Credit Acceptance wrecked your credit? Force them to fix it — and you may get paid.

Inaccurate repossession marks, wrong balances, and reporting errors can be disputed and removed under the FCRA — and when a furnisher gets it wrong, the law can put money back in your pocket. Here’s how to make them correct it.

Is an American Credit Acceptance repossession or late-payment mark dragging down your credit score? A repossession can sit on your report for up to seven years — but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. Inaccurate marks can be disputed and removed, and even accurate ones fade with the right strategy.

Your key tool: the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) gives you the right to dispute anything on your credit report that is inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable — and the credit bureaus and the furnisher must investigate. If they can’t verify it, it comes off.

Step 1: Get your reports and read them closely

Pull all three credit reports (Equifax, Experian, TransUnion) and examine the American Credit Acceptance tradeline for errors — they’re more common than people expect:

  • Wrong dates (date of first delinquency, repossession date, or “date opened”).
  • An incorrect balance or a deficiency amount that doesn’t match.
  • Showing as “repossession” when it was voluntary, or duplicate entries.
  • Reporting after the debt was settled, paid, or discharged.
  • An account that isn’t even yours (identity error).

Step 2: Dispute inaccuracies in writing

  1. Dispute with each credit bureau that shows the error, in writing, stating exactly what’s wrong and why.
  2. Include proof (payment records, settlement letters, anything that supports you).
  3. The bureau must investigate (generally within about 30 days) and correct or delete what can’t be verified.
  4. Keep copies of everything and send it so you have proof of delivery.

Step 3: For accurate marks, play the long game

If the repossession is accurate, it can’t simply be erased — but its impact shrinks over time, especially as you add positive history. Some people also request a “goodwill” adjustment or negotiate deletion as part of settling a deficiency (get any such deal in writing before paying). And remember: an inaccurate deficiency balance tied to the repo is itself disputable.
